Sound is one of the most important quality aspects in multi-family buildings, where pleasant sound in one apartment may be experienced as disturbing noise in another. One of the requirements of a good apartment is thus, that it not only prevents "internal" noise caused by impact sounds, music, etc., but also that it effectively dampens external noise from, e.g., traffic. The residential system, with its load-bearing outer walls and floors with long spans, creates the conditions for good sound insulation in all respects and covers the entire frequency range registered by the human ear. The insulation of the impact sounds as well as airborne sounds can be increased by using proper floor covering or sub-flooring.
Appropriate choice of precast concrete structures is able to influence the sound insulation characteristics significantly, even up to 8 decibels.
